Tondeka Metro Mass Transit Bus System (MTBS)
Tondeka Metro Mass Transit Bus System (MTBS) project is an initiative to import 980 buses from India in a bid to improve the traffic flow in the city.
It is proposed that the Project be implemented through UDC in partnership with Tondeka Metro Company Limited. UDC will own the buses and other assets under the SPV until the loan is full serviced. The proposed SPV structure is 20% / 80% with the promoters contributing 20% of the required funding and 80% being raised by UDC.
The main objective of the project is to transform the urban system of the greater Kampala Metropolitan area with a fully integrated transport solution that provides reliable, timely and affordable urban transport.
The manufacturer will offer the JanBus– which operates an intelligent transportation system (ITS) that provides passenger information system, internal surveillance system real time vehicle tracking, and Global Position System (GPS) map based on board navigation, vehicle health monitoring, on-board LCD driver display and smart card reader/ticketing machines.
The buses will operate in the radius of 12-20KM from the CBD apart from Kajjansi and Namugongo, leaving taxis to ply on the other routes not covered by the MBTS. The project will cover 4 zones of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area – East West, North, South and Entebbe road from the CBD.
